A Note from Marilyn
Dear Neighbors,
I've spent my life helping kids and teachers.
I started out teaching French and English in San Francisco high schools, and instructing French at SF State University (then college). Wanting to interact with kids in a more personal way, I became a middle school counselor and learned even more about student needs – both academic needs and social-emotional needs. I helped parents, too, and, of course, the teachers. The world of education is a lot to navigate.
Later I founded two nonprofits for kids — one running tutoring and counseling programs, and one that has been putting free books into the hands of under-resourced children for over thirty years. I've spent thousands of volunteer hours helping kids and sitting beside children as they sounded out words they didn't believe they could read.
And since 2001, I've served as your elected trustee on the Marin County Board of Education.
Our board plays an important role in matters that greatly affect our students: how children with significant disabilities are served, what happens to a teenager who's been expelled, whether a student who isn't headed to a four-year college has a real path to a good job. I've sat through those decisions for twenty-five years. I’ve seen what works and I’ve learned what students need to succeed.
Most of the trustees serving with me today are in their first term. I'm proud to help them, and they bring energy this board needs. As a longer-serving trustee, I can provide perspective and more experienced judgement. Why we structured a program the way we did, what we tried years ago that didn't work, which promises got made and to whom. That memory is not a formality. It's how a board can avoid repeating itself at children's expense.
My husband Ken and I have lived in southern Marin for decades — right here in Trustee Area 5. Our three children are grown now. I've served this community as a parent, volunteering in our kids’ schools, and as a Rotarian and Past President of the Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset.
The programs and services of the Marin County Board of Education help shape the educational experiences of your children and grandchildren. I'd be honored to continue this work for them.

Three commitments, shaped by a career - not a campaign
Literacy First
Reading opens every other door. A child who isn’t reading confidently by third grade can spend the rest of school trying to catch up — and too many never do. I’ve devoted thousands of volunteer hours to helping children become readers, one child at a time. On the board, I carry that same commitment forward, championing early-reading support for the students who need it most and strong professional development that gives teachers the tools to teach reading effectively.
Students Who
Need More
When it comes to education, every child needs something special. But some need more. (And some need even more than that.) That’s why I became a school counselor. I give my heart to kids with special needs: children with significant disabilities, students in the juvenile court and community schools, young people in foster care, kids who’ve been expelled and need a real second chance. l feel privileged to be in a position where I can turn that commitment into making a real difference in their lives.
Wise Use of
Public Dollars
We don’t always need to do separately what we can do better — and less expensively — together. That’s why, with other trustees and county staff, I co-founded Marin’s Efficiency and Effectiveness Collaborative, bringing trustees and superintendents together to find new ways districts can share services and resources. From food and transportation to vendor contracts and business services, the possibilities keep growing. Working together isn’t just efficient. It’s smart stewardship.

On November 3, voters in Belvedere, Tiburon, Corte Madera, Larkspur, Greenbrae, and part of Kentfield (Trustee Area 5) will choose who will represent them on the Marin County Board of Education for the next four years.
Marin’s students deserve the best, and that means having a representative who will serve them best. Marilyn Nemzer – that’s me – is the only candidate for Trustee Area 5 with a background in education, the only one who understands this job, and the only one knows it firsthand from years of doing the work. I bring experience, perspective, and proven judgment to every decision I make on behalf of Marin’s students.
